In 2022, delays actually\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsr.com\/will-launch-delays-and-failure-slow-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased as the year went<\/a>\u00a0on. A majority of delays during that wrap-up to 2022 were caused by technical failures associated with software issues, limited testing, or battery problems. And apologies, the 2023 stats are not out on delays yet (if you find some let us know). Several things contribute to the space industry\u2019s chronic tardiness: poor interdepartmental communication, supply chain delays, lack of organization, underestimated lead times, risk management, permits, and launch delays that lead to more launch delays.<\/p><p>As space companies scale and build increasingly more complex systems like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/can-worlds-first-space-sweeper-make-dent-orbiting-debris-180978515\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">space garbage trucks<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/alexknapp\/2023\/10\/18\/this-asteroid-mining-startup-is-ready-to-launch-the-first-ever-commercial-deep-space-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asteroid mining ships<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/orbit-fab-gas-stations-in-space-scn-spc-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gas stations in space<\/a>, they must advance their development and manufacturing techniques. Space engineering is hard, but it doesn\u2019t have to be\u00a0<i>that\u00a0<\/i>hard. Sure, there are some reasons for delays outside of internal control like weather or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/space-industry-deals-with-launch-shortage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bottlenecks<\/a>\u00a0at launch providers or subcomponent supply chains. But, by implementing good practices to reduce iterations and better estimating supply chain lead times, companies can get more accurate timelines and budgets.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22ddbe17 post-anchored-tag elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"22ddbe17\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Shouldn\u2019t we be better at this by now?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-73c05ef5 post-text-block elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"73c05ef5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The space industry is relatively new and still trying to find its legs, but time will not magically solve this problem. NASA has been manufacturing spacecraft longer than any private industry player and NASA still underestimates the timeline and budget of almost every mission they design.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/12\/22\/1066377182\/why-some-astronomers-once-feared-nasas-james-webb-space-telescope-would-never-la\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a>: launched over a decade after estimated launch, $6.5B over the original budget.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/space\/2023\/09\/independent-review-finds-mars-sample-return-mission-important-but-broken\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mars Sample Return<\/a>: anticipated 2 years delay, $6B over budget.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/science\/nasa-artemis-inspector-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artemis:<\/a>\u00a0delayed at least 1 year, $4.3B over budget so far.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><p><br \/>To be fair, the Artemis delay can\u2019t be blamed completely on NASA. Industry partners had their own\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/nasa-delays-artemis-2-and-3-missions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">developmental delays<\/a>\u00a0including SpaceX human landing systems and Axiom\u2019s space suits. SpaceX also ran into some regulatory issues after Starship\u2019s two stages failed to separate in a test flight. Now they must comply with the FAA\u2019s 63 corrective actions that arose from a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/newsroom\/faa-closes-spacex-starship-mishap-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 investigation<\/a>\u00a0and acknowledge the concerns of environmental groups worried about Starship\u2019s damage to the surrounding ecosystem. Still, why hasn\u2019t NASA gotten better at estimating timelines and budgets by now? Mainly bureaucracy. In the words of an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/afwerx.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AFWERX<\/a>\u00a0fellow I spoke to recently, \u201cThe two things the government hates are the way things are now, and change.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-11d2c758 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"11d2c758\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">At least, NewSpace companies should lead the way<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-202bb73f post-text-block elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"202bb73f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/durolabs.co\/blog\/aerospace-industry-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NewSpace companies<\/a>\u00a0don\u2019t have the same excuse. They often have the opposite mindset when it comes to implementing change, focusing on agile processes and the reuse of design baselines to get to market faster. Yet across all facets of the industry, there is rampant timeline mismanagement and under-budgeted projects. The endless kinks and crawls of a quickly scaling team can lead to even simple tasks inciting a tangle of mismatched documents, hours of frustration, and several reiterations. However, implementing tools and practices to reduce delays is a lot easier at a space startup than at NASA. Engineering and manufacturing teams will be able to collaborate more easily if, for example, an engineer can submit new design revisions through a Change Order process in which all relevant departments can participate in review and approval.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-be75dc0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"be75dc0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Version control and lack of data centralization<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-509ed1b5 post-text-block elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"509ed1b5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Unauthorized team members can make untracked changes to offline documents that could fumble the manufacturing process. As a result, engineers or manufacturers may need to go back to a previous iteration of the project, but aren\u2019t always able to find the right document. Alternatively, when individuals work from different versions, there\u2019s no single source of trust. Engineers may end up repeating work or missing important things when combining information manually.<\/p><p><b>Solution<\/b>: Locked cloud-based documents with traceable edits will give engineers a \u201csingle-source of truth\u201d to work from.\u00a0 A platform that integrates with other manufacturing applications and CAD tools is ideal to ensure an uninterrupted Digital Thread.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6e553584 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6e553584\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Leadtime guesswork<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-343d7c87 post-text-block elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"343d7c87\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Customers might ask a salespeople about lead times. However, they might not have time to gather information from different departments or determine workload. So instead, they just throw a number out that seems reasonable. Ideally, this would be a number that the customer will remember and base their mission timelines on.\u00a0If salesperson mentions a lead time that is not enough, and the manufacturing team faces a crunch on testing and evaluation time, the result is a higher-risk mission.<\/p><p><b>Solution:<\/b>\u00a0The entire product lifecycle is laid out on a single cloud-native PLM platform. The sales team has access to design and development dates and updates to make lead time estimates simple and accurate. That means including all relevant departments on one platform from the design stage and making it easy to share information and track progress. If used correctly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/durolabs.co\/blog\/agile-plm-aerospace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">modern PLMs<\/a>\u00a0can decrease miscommunication and rework, in turn decreasing lead times and costs. Relevant departments can include engineers, supply chain managers, operations managers, quality managers, and manufacturers.
